Physical Education at Rossett Acre
Fun, enjoyment, self-confidence and competence to excel in a variety of activities are the forefront of our PE curriculum, offering two hours of taught PE during the week as well as providing a range of extra-curricular sports and activities throughout the year. Children in EYFS and KS1 master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination through team games, dance and gymnastic activities. In KS2 children are able to apply these basic movement skills through a wide variety of team games, including those requiring the principles of attacking and defending. Children develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance through athletic, gymnastic and dance activities. Outdoor and adventurous activities provide challenging opportunities for individuals and teams, for example through orienteering and problem solving activities. Swimming instruction is provided to Years 2, 4 and 6 for a period of one school term. Throughout each unit of work, children are able to evaluate their own performance and that of others,, as well engaging in competitive activities to embed sporting values, such as fairness, teamwork and respect. Intra-school competitions take place throughout the year, whether within class time, or across the whole school as part of our house system.
As part of our ongoing development of our PE and Sport provision, we have written a 2 year development plan, designed to enhance participation and engagement from our pupils. This includes extending the variety of sports on offer beyond the more traditional school sports such as Archery and Golf. For more details, visit the sports funding section of our website.
As members of the Harrogate Schools Sports Partnership, children at Rossett Acre have the opportunity to participate in competitive and non-competitive sporting events alongside other local schools. Last year, children competed in sports such as Tag Rugby, Rounders, Athletics, Cross-country, Football, Netball and Change 4 Life festivals. We had particular success in Quicksticks Hockey, reaching the North Yorkshire Level 3 school games festival competition and coming first!
